I began creating the first vessels for 'Fleet' installation back in 2018, thinking about the different ways it could be installed and evolve in a site specific way. In early December 2022 I made a series of drawing playing around with how it could be adapted for the space in the A.P.T. Gallery and the final result was on show throughout October 2023.
I am now working on a booklet which will tell the stories of each of the vessels and will make this available online. In the meantime, here is the general text for the artwork. Fleet 2023
‘Fleet’ is a multimedia immersive installation which explores the themes of migration and trade, using imagery inspired by the movement of peoples, wildlife, culture and ideas across the globe.
The imagined vessels are poetic transformations which conjure sailing ships: caravels, clippers, junkships and curraghs; spacecraft carrying cargoes of plant life which ferry their stories into the gallery.
They sail out of billowing fibre clouds with twinkling lights over projected waters filled with sounds of the sea and the sky. The air is perfumed by their cargoes of spice while golden planes fly overhead like the splinters of dreams.
I hope that you will experience the wonder and the scary implications of each vessel’s story, what’s to celebrate and what big ethical concerns need to be addressed.
