“One slows down in the presence of art that has been crafted slowly by an artist who is herself an acute perceptor of time."

Artist's Statement
My practice centres around the desire to understand and analyse the extremity of human experience. I am fascinated by the possibilities of effecting transformation through exchange and encounter and keep going back to the fundamental question "what does the experience of living mean for us both as individuals and as a global society? The history of humanity makes for a scary read: war, destruction, lots of nastiness.... and yet there is much to celebrate - our diverse and complex responses to the world we live in, our urge to make stuff, to pick ourselves up from destruction and start over. We have profound ties to memory and culture, we have affection one another and at best, can be selfless and kind... This is what keeps me going anyway. I combine a wide range of materials, I like to experiment and find ways to create things differently, my new media work has grown out of a 2D/3D practice and now that practice is influenced by my VR artwork. In terms of process most of my work involves drawing, literally and and metaphorically. Drawing bridges those gaps between collaged and painted images, blurring the divide between them and drawing together different sources, materials and aesthetics. When I create works in virtual reality I am drawing 3 dimensionally with a range of different tools. When preparing folders of birds and boats, architecture and people for my collages I think of my obsessive cutting out as drawing with scissors, following lines as closely as possible adding additions, re outlining, redefining. Planning sculptural and installation work I make sketches of 3D space - volumes, and forms in a linear shorthand so as to clarify my ideas, it is an integral part of how I work. Workaround solutions for technical problems, and there are many, keep me awake at night - but in a good way. It's an interesting, evolving process and every work I make feels like a fresh beginning at some level. This process reflects my interest in exploration in general, it's a way of bearing witness to the ceaseless global migration of both peoples and ideas down through history. I am committed to meaningful exchange with everyone who visits/views or contributes to my work - I am interested in your response no matter how critical and I want to welcome you into my 'world'. |
